Kabupaten yang terletak sekitar 350 km  sebelah Utara Makassar ini sangat terkenal dengan bentuk bangunan rumah  adatnya. Rumah adat ini bernama Tongkonan <a title="Tongkonan, Apaan Tuhh...?" href="http://tongkonanku.blogspot.com/2008/09/tongkonan-apaan-tuhh.html" target="_self"><strong> </strong></a>Atapnya terbuat dari bambu yang  dibelah dan disusun bertumpuk, namun saat ini banyak juga yang  menggunakan seng. Tongkonan ini juga memiliki strata sesuai derajat  kebangsawanan masyarakat seperti strata emas, perunggu, besi dan  kuningan.Saking begitu melekatnya image <strong>Tanah  Toraja</strong> dengan bangunan rumah adatnya ini, sebagai bentuk  promosi pariwisata dan untuk menggaet turis Jepang ke daerah ini, maka  rumah adat pun dibangun di negeri “matahari terbit” itu. Bangunannya  dikerjakan oleh orang Toraja sendiri dan diboyong pengusaha pariwisata  ke negari sakura. Sekarang di Jepang, sudah ada dua Tongkonan yang  sangat mirip dengan Tongkonan yang asli. Kehadiran Tongkonan selalu  membuat kagum masyarakat negeri tersebut karena bentuknya yang unik.  Perbedaannya dengan yang ada di Tanah Toraja hanya terletak di atapnya  yang menggunakan bambu.</p>
<p>Masih banyak lagi  daya tarik dari Tanah Toraja selain upacara adat rambu solo (pemakaman)  yang sudah kesohor selama ini. Sebutlah kuburan bayi di atas pohon tarra  di Kampung Kambira, Kecamatan Sangalla, sekitar 20 kilometer dari  Rantepao, yang disiapkan bagi jenazah bayi berusia 0 &#8211; 7 tahun.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.pelesir.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/kuburan-bayi-di-pohon.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-385" title="kuburan bayi di pohon" src="http://www.pelesir.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/kuburan-bayi-di-pohon-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a>Meski mengubur bayi di atas pohon tarra itu sudah tidak  dilaksanakan lagi sejak puluhan tahun terakhir, tetapi pohon tempat  “mengubur” mayat bayi itu masih tetap tegak dan banyak dikunjungi  wisatawan. Di atas pohon tarra yang buahnya mirip buah sukun yang biasa  dijadikan sayur oleh penduduk setempat itu dengan lingkaran batang pohon  sekitar 3,5 meter, tersimpan puluhan jenazah bayi.</p>
<p>Sebelum jenazah dimasukkan ke batang pohon, terlebih  dahulu pohon itu dilubangi kemudian mayat bayi diletakkan ke dalam  kemudian ditutupi dengan serat pohon kelapa berwarna hitam. Setelah  puluhan tahun, jenazah bayi itu akan menyatu dengan pohon tersebut. Ini  suatu daya tarik bagi para pelancong dan untuk masyarakat Tanah Toraja  tetap menganggap tempat tersebut suci seperti anak yang baru lahir.</p>
<p>Penempatan jenazah bayi di  pohon ini juga disesuaikan dengan strata sosial masyarakat. Makin tinggi  derajat sosial keluarga itu maka makin tinggi pula tempat bayi yang  dikuburkan di batang pohon Tarra tersebut. Bahkan, bayi yang meninggal  dunia diletakkan sesuai arah tempat tinggal keluarga yang berduka. Kalau  rumahnya ada di bagian barat pohon, maka jenazah anak akan diletakkan  di sebelah barat.</p>

<p>Untuk  menuju <strong>Tanah Toraja</strong> yang mengagumkan ini terdapat  jalur penerbangan domestik Makassar &#8211; Tanah Toraja yang saat ini hanya  sekali seminggu dan memakai pesawat kecil berpenumpang delapan orang,  yang memakan waktu 45 menit dari Bandara Hasanuddin Makassar. Jika lewat  darat, perjalanan yang cukup melelahkan ini membutuhkan waktu selama  tujuh hingga sepuluh jam.</p>
<p>Event menarik di kawasan  wisata ini yaitu adanya upacara pemakaman jenazah (rambu solo) dan  rambu tuka (pesta syukuran) yang merupakan kalender tetap tiap tahun.  Selain event tersebut, para pengunjung bisa melihat dari dekat obyek  wisata budaya menarik lainnya seperti penyimpanan jenazah di penampungan  mayat berbentuk “kontainer” ukuran raksasa dengan lebar 3 meter dan  tinggi 10 meter serta tongkonan yang sudah berusia 600 tahun di Londa,  Rantepao.</p>
