Exploring The Canary Island Of Lanzarote

Posted on December 21, 2009 by admin

canaryThere are seven islands that comprise the Canarian archipelago. But they are by no means all birds of a feather. As smaller islands such as Lanzarote remain relatively unspoiled, despite welcoming millions of tourist guests every year. The Canary Islands are in fact the second most popular holiday destination in Spain after Catalunya. And the landscape of larger islands such as Tenerife and Gran Canaria attests to this. As they are dominated by high rise hotels and apartment complexes – especially in the south, where the main resorts are based.

Lanzarote however is different. Here high rise buildings were banned back in the 1970´s – along with advertising billboards. And strict planning laws are in place to control future development. With the aim being to keep Lanzarote as unspoiled and as untouched by tourism as possible. This sensitive approach was fostered by a local artist called César Manrique. Who helped illustrate that the islands terrain and landscapes – created by centuries of volcanic activity – was unique and had to be carefully protected. Especially when tourism started to take off in the 1970´s and threatened to engulf the island. Thanks to Manrique though the threat of burial by concrete was staved off – leaving Lanzarote much as nature intended.

Getting to Lanzarote Flights to Lanzarote are available from across the UK – with all of the leading budget airlines now operating services to the island. The journey time is four hours and all flights touch down at the sole international airport, Arrecife. Places To Stay There are over 200 hotels in Lanzarote. Along with a wide selection of apartments and villas. During the winter months Playa Blanca is the best choice of the islands three main holiday resorts. As its southerly location tends to deliver better weather. Puerto del Carmen is the largest resort – located close to the airport and wit the best nightlife. Whilst Costa Teguise is a good choice for anyone keen to explore the island. As all of the main attractions are close at hand. Getting Around There are Lanzarote car hire offices in all of the main resorts. In contrast to many other holiday islands rental rates here are surprisingly cheap. Thanks to the islands year round holiday season. And a small two door car can be hired for about €15 per day. The surreal scenery of the volcanic region is a real must see. As are the islands many picturesque towns and villages – such as Haria, Yaiza and Teguise.
